There are a few ways you can recovery your arm back over the water ready for your next stroke. It does not matter too much how you recover your arm back as long as you meet the criteria below:

1. Your arm and hand are relaxed.

2. Your arm and hand clear the water.

3. Your elbow passes your ears in front before your hand enters the water.

4. You engage and use your upper/middle back muscles to lift your arm high - not just your deltoid muscles (shoulders).
