FREESTYLE CORE FUNDAMENTALS

Forward Propulsion

These are the bedrock principles of freestyle that remain the most effective way to move forward through the water. Small tweaks in different aspects of the freestyle technique has, and will change over time as new discoveries are made but the bedrock core fundamentals remain the same. These are the very core basics that need to be mastered in order to swim efficient freestyle.

There are 2 aspects of freestyle that move you forward through the water.

1. Your underwater pull combined with your body rotation.

2. Your kick (not everyone).

1. Your underwater pull combined with your body rotation.

2. Your kick (not everyone).

Using your legs to kick for propulsion is not applicable to everyone. Becoming good enough to use your kick for forward propulsion takes a lot of time and effort.

This time and effort is most likely not worth it if you learnt to swim later in life and swim for triathlon and open water.

If you fall into this category you still need to have the correct kicking technique but you will use your kick for balance and to keep your legs high - not for moving you forward.

If you are someone who races in the pool then you need to have a good kick and good enough that you can use it effectively for forward propulsion.
